“Teen Mom”

Shows such as Teen Mom (trailer) and 16 and Pregnant have sparked incredible interest from viewers. An article in the July 2009 issue of USA Today stated that 2.1 million viewers tuned in to watch the first season finale of 16 and Pregnant. Teen Mom surpassed 16 and Pregnant with 3.6 million viewers during its first season finale.

Teen Mom has become quite popular because it gives viewers a chance to see how the girls tackle the challenges of motherhood. The show offers an unglamorous and, sometimes, rude awakening to the realities of teen parenting. We watch the girls as they try to adjust to their new lives—being forced to live with the consequences of their actions.

The show can be enjoyed by both parents and their children. Although, some parents would argue that the show isn’t appropriate for younger age groups because it discusses many sensitive subjects—including birth control, adoption, and sex.

Teen Mom, as well as 16 and Pregnant, can potentially serve as a way to open up dialogue between parents and teens about sex and its consequences. Hopefully, the show will also serve as a wake-up call and help other teens make better decision about sex in their lives.
